Focused on your vision.

Our approach to every design project always begins with the client. We listen to their needs, desires, the project vision and goals; then we formulate a custom-tailored strategy to synthesize a design solution that brings together all of the disparate parts and pieces of the equation for a cohesive design solution.

Our design kick-off often begins with a discussion of precedent images, looking at examples of similar architectural environments to establish a general architectural and stylistic direction that will inform the rest of the project. In some cases, a needs assessment or programming activity is conducted to determine what the scope of the project should be, if it isn’t already known. In many cases, a site visit and existing conditions assessment is conducted at or towards the beginning of the project. After these initial activities, there is a comprehensive design activity, which almost always begins with conceptual design and design development, and often leads to either a pricing set for contractors, or full construction drawings — and, ultimately, a completed building or built environment. At various points throughout the design process, SDFA and the client will meet to discuss the in-progress design drawings, review progress, and add comments, suggestions and other feedback to keep the process moving towards the goal.

A Collaborative approach.

Our process is collaborative, iterative, and involves several layers of design, creativity, code analysis, material research and specification, and budget and constructability review. During the project there is ongoing interaction with the client, and regular coordination with other project stakeholders (i.e., contractors, engineering consultants, regulatory officials, etc.). The various project partners and other entities involved will vary from project to project, depending on its scale, complexity, and location. SDFA will work with the client to advise and recommend the particular combination of entities that may be involved, and will often be the conduit to bring them into the fold of the project for coordination at the appropriate time.

While the location, size, type, scale and scope of the project will always vary from one to the next, our focus on the client and desire to exceed the goals of the project remain unwaveringly consistent. We look forward to helping you on your next project!
